Illinois Senator and Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama addresses a meet-the-candidate event in the gymnasium of Churchill County Junior High School January 14 in Fallon, Nevada. Obama and rival candidate, New York Senator Hillary Clinton are racing to shore up votes in Nevada as the state's caucus nears.
What the media wants us to think:
Barack Obama seems to be connecting to the people. He has been going to high schools, and making speeches. In hopes for his candidacy as president of the United States, Obama makes his way to public places across the nation to broadcast his views for the future. In this picture, he seems charismatic and as if he has something important to say. The expression on his face is one of leadership and sincerity.

That is not leadership and sincerity that is like the smile you put on when youre going to see a family member you dont like but have to pretend you do.

I agree with Daniel on how the media portrays Obama. The picture shows Obama standing, holing a mic and making a handgesture. The way his hand is positioned tells us he is trying to emphazise a point or a main idea. The picture background tells us that despite the location, Obama will stand up for his ideas. Whoever took the picture wanted to show the positive side of Obama.

It is very funny that the picture made him seem like he had something important to say. But really he has nothing but charisma. The american people need to get past the fact that he is a black canidate. Democrats seem to want change for the sake of change. Not really seeing the reprocussions of their vote and caring about the issue.

Daniel - good pic. A link to the article would help us get a better idea of what the intention was. You make some good points about his appearance.
Flip (can't give you credit if i do not know who you are), you make a good point about his gesture.
I would also like to draw your attention to what is most unusual about the image - lighting and basketball hoop(?) Both these make the image a little odd. Any explanations?

flip_life= Chris.

To ford's request about the background; the background in this picture is the setting of a basketball gym in a school. What makes it unusual is that the setting may seem awkward for a politician. The media wants us to see that Obama is trying to convey his ideas to the people, despite the location. Whether it would be a school gym, the park, or a certain block of the neighborhood, the media wants us to see that Obama himself travels deep into the suburbs to encourage and motivate people for his vote. Based on the picture, the photographer wants to portray Obama as confident man, despite the location he is in. We can see this on his gesture; the way he points his hand up tells us he is stressing an idea to his audience.
